Emergency Food, Shelter Program Gets ARRA Funds
Emergency food, shelter program gets $37,695 in ARRA funds
June 9, 2009 – Carroll County Government will receive $37,695 in federal funds to supplement
emergency food and shelter programs in the county, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
(ARRA), or “stimulus” funding. The money will be used to offer more food and shelter to needy residents
across the county. Carroll’s program was selected by a national board chaired by a representative of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. Other representatives on the board come from nonprofit organizations, such
as the Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; and
National Council of the Churches. Funding was approved by Congress.
Carroll County’s Circle of Caring/Homeless Board will determine how the local award will be
distributed. Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private nonprofits or units of government; 2) have an accounting system; 3) practice nondiscrimination; 4) have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. The deadline for proposals is Friday, June 26. Applications are available online at http://ccgovernment.carr.org/ccg/housing/default.asp.
Carroll County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously to agencies that assisted
with utilities, rent, and meals for Carroll residents. Agencies interested in applying for these funds must submit
proposals to: Janet Boyd, Local EFSP Board Chairperson, 10 Distillery Drive, Suite 101, Westminster MD
21157. She can be reached at 410-386-3600 or by email at
